Best Beginnings

image I hosted the Best Beginnings launch with actress Celia Imrie and put actor Leon Ockenden through his paces...as myself, Leon and 9 other actors including Shameless star Ben Batt are doing a bike ride from London to Paris in September for Best Beginnings which is an amazing charity dedicated to ending child health inequalities in the UK. The Bike ride is over 300km in 3 days! My bum is going to be sore! Funny thing is I don't even have a bike! I'm going to do some training sessions with the actors to help them get fit and ready for the ride including one in Soho Square, London on June 1st. Theo Walcott's parents were they today, such lovely people, we actually put the world to rights about the World Cup and funnily enough health and fitness. We came to the conclusion that England can win the World Cup if we all collectively think positive and send the positive vibes to the England team...what do you reckon?

Reebok bike shoot

Yesterday I spent literally 7 hours riding around on a bike for a photoshoot, which sounds pretty cool, but my bum doesn’t half hurt today. The woods we did the shoot in were really pretty, a place in Milton Keynes called Asperly Woods and it was a big relief that the sun was shining.

I do look a bit daft in an oversized helmet, think I must have been wearing a big head man’s helmet, oh well, safety first! I was also wearing trainers 2 sizes too small for me at one point, that didn’t last long as my feet have already had enough of a beating after running the London Marathon; and my face every time my feet cramped didn’t quite suit the ‘happy cycling around look.’

It was a fun shoot and did pelt around for a little bit so had a bit of an exercise. I have to admit I was running out of steam at the end, especially having got back from Manchester so late (presenting Sky Sports Speedway) but we were saved when some lovely kiddie winks bought us some jelly babies and tangtastic haribo’s. Brilliant!

I have never seen or been to a Speedway meeting like that in my life…have you?

I don’t think anybody could ever have possibly thought a team could go down to three riders by the end of a meeting. Every time I interviewed Aces manager Chris Morton there was one rider less.

I really thought that Belle Vue could give table leaders Poole Pirates a run for their money. To be fair they most likely would have if they’d have had an actual team.

Climbing (actually running) Table Mountain

After much consideration about climbing, actually all I could think about was challenging myself and running up Table Mountain. I found myself at the foot of the sandstone range and this particular morning it only had a tiny table cloth of cloud. I was all ready to go when this mysterious guy started talking to me, he’d been up already and collected water which he said was the freshest you could get. Let’s call him the ‘spiritual guy’, so he told me that Table Mountain is where masculinity and femininity meet and to set an intention before I tackle the cliff face. I’d also heard it was the stairway to heaven, which didn’t impress me so much as I’m not quite ready to go to heaven yet!

Off I went with a good fast pace, I felt this immense energy despite the fact I had a chest infection and sounded like a heavy smoker. I walked the first half as it wasn’t that safe under foot. Then I had the urge, by this time my friends had told me to go ahead and leave them because I was annoying the pants of them with my speedy competitiveness. I broke into a run and had a very sad but great satisfaction overtaking a group of 6 guys, I really am sad!

There was definitely something very spiritual and empowering about this climb, although the last 20 minutes my legs and chest were burning. The only thing keeping me going was my pure stubbornness and the fact that there was a guy running behind me and there was NO way I was going to let him overtake me!
The view was breathtaking (3,563 ft) and you could see the doughnut of the newly-built Green Point Stadium. On a slight digression, I can’t wait for the World Cup!
I climbed back down which hurt loads actually, didn’t realise how steep it was until I was trying to run down a cliff face, not clever.

Annoyingly we took so many photos; we even had a photo of the ‘spiritual man’ playing a strange looking instrument. But my friend’s camera got stolen the next day so we lost all of them, apart from a few I took on my Blackberry…naughty stealing horrible nasty thieves! We want our photos!
